Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a model of therapy created by Marsha Linehan. It was originally designed to help those individuals who suffer with Borderline Personality Disorder but it has most recently been found to be useful for many other individuals as well. Dialectical Behavior Therapy consists of four main areas:
1) Mindfulness: This skill area helps individuals to become more aware of their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. One unique skill is learning how to make decisions based on wisdom and not emotion.
2) Emotional Regulation: This skill area helps individuals learn to recognize, understand, and manage their emotions rather than feeling victim to overwhelming emotions.
3) Interpersonal Effectiveness: This skill area helps individuals learn how to get along with others more effectively. One important area is in learning how to be properly assertive.
4) Distress Tolerance Skills: This skill set helps individuals learn to tolerate deeply distressing emotions and events.
